Movement Freedom
I have had so many clients recently who say things like:
“I have bad knees, so my doctor said I can’t squat anymore”
“I hurt my back deadlifting, so now I can’t do it anymore.”
“I’m too old to run anymore, my hips are bad.”
Etc.
Etc.
Etc.
I get so sad I hear something like this. Our healthcare system and the age of health-gurus on social media are so wrapped up in restrictions and fear-avoidance, that it frequently scares people into avoiding a lot of movements.
The thing is, the human body is wildly resilient and adaptable. If a joint can move in a certain way, then it’s totally safe to do that! You just have to build up your capacity and tolerance to that movement. More on what that means in a future blog post, because I really want to break that down.
One thing you will never here from me is that you can never do a certain movement again. I might tell you that we need to take a break from it, or make some modifications while we’re rehabbing an injury, but it’s never off the table for good. Movement is Medicine. Your body wants and needs to be able to move! More problems will pop up if you start restricting movements. You’ll get weaker, you’ll lose mobility, you’ll start to have more pain, etc. All because you thought you were protecting yourself in the first place.
My goal as a PT is to give you the freedom to move in all the ways that you want and need to be able to do.
Want to start dancing? Great!
Get back to deadlifts? Let’s do it!
Run a marathon? Heck yeah!
I want to help you get started on your goals, whatever they are. We just need to figure out what is limiting us right now so that we can work on building up the strength and mobility you need to conquer those movements.
